How do I search for variations on a search term?

BACK TO LIST OF TOPICS

ProQuest Learning: Literature allows you to find variations on a word or number by using the following characters, referred to as 'wildcard operators', to represent one or more characters in a word or number:

Wildcard Description Example
@ matches one alphabetical character exactly l@st will find last, lest, list, lost
# matches one numeric character exactly #600 will find 1600, 2600, etc.
* matches any character(s) jo* will find journalistic, journal etc.
? matches one character exactly la?er will find later, layer, laser, etc.
[ ] matches only one character specified within the brackets; a hyphen can be used to indicate a range of numbers or letters 199[1-6] will find 1991, 1992, 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996
[^] matches any character except the next character; a hyphen can be used to indicate a range of numbers or letters 199[^1-3] will not find 1991, 1992 or 1993, but will find 1994 etc.

Type the first few letters (or stem) of the word in the Search box followed by the wildcard operator and click the 'Search' button. Any entry containing variations on the word you typed will be listed.

BACK TO LIST OF TOPICS

How do I find all records containing the word 'rugby'?

  • Enter rugby in the Search by keyword(s) box.
  • Click the 'Search' button.

The Search Results screen will be displayed, listing all the articles containing the word 'rugby'.

TIP: If you want to search for more than one word you don't have to divide up your search terms with a comma, a space between your words will do.

TIP: ProQuest Learning: Literature will search for exactly the words you have typed in. So entering articles referring to Israel will produce a list of all works which contain the words 'articles', 'referring', 'to' and 'Israel'.

TIP: You do not need to type an accented letter, as they are found if you type the unaccented form; for example, to search for rôle you can type role.

TIP: All searches are case-insensitive, so you don't have to know whether a word should be capitalized or not. For example, there is no difference between Carr, carr or CaRr.
